2 Minutes with Firefighter Nigel

Portrait of Firefighter Nigel

Nigel has been working as a firefighter for around 14 years, and for the last 6 months, has been working part-time at Tecna UK as a Sub-Contractor. Just recently, Tecna UK held a friends and family BBQ with a range of activities to raise money for The Fire Fighters Charity – a charity aiming to support fire fighters and their families. With the charity close to his heart, Nigel explains what the charity aims to do with the raised money, and how it affects him personally.

What is the Fire Fighters Charity?

It used to have a different name, fire brigade benevolent fund, we’re now fire services. Whenever you see them, perhaps on a high street and they’re trying to raise money with buckets, people just think it is going to their local station. And it’s not, it’s always for the charity. The charity is separate, the fire service receives funds from the government, whereas the charity is completely dependent on what it gets.

What does the charity do?

The charity is there for purposes that we ideally, would hopefully never need, but they provide recovery and recuperation centres for injured or mentally affected firefighters so that they can get the help that they need. So, either rehabilitation, physio, any psychological help, even help with money problems. They have a few centres around the country, so you can go, get rest bite, fully recover and be able to come back and perform your duties once again.

How does the charity affect you personally?

I hope that I will never need it, but it’s good to know that it’s there if I should ever require it if I’m injured, in the line of duty or outside, and you want to be able to function and do your role as well as you can. Then there is help, that is only there because of the money given to the charity. Otherwise, you’d be waiting in line at the GP’s office to try and get 6 sessions of something, whereas there, you can get fully recovered, and come back to work and do what you started out doing and what you want to do.
